The Island of Seventy Beaches
Skiathos Greece, is a very green island covered by a thick pine forest. It is the smallest but most cosmopolitan island of the Sporades group, located in the north-western Aegean.
Skiathos Town is the chief place and indeed the island's only real town, where almost all the permanent inhabitants of the island live. Skiathos Town, has narrow cobbled streets, its little whitewashed houses with tiled roofs and its old churches. There is a ban on high rise hotels on the island. The harbour front at Skiathos is split into old and new.
The locals grow olives, fruit and walnuts and there is both local honey and wine.
The island of Skiathos has seventy beaches all around very popular and can get really crowded during July and August. It was one of the first island to cash in on the tourist boom in the 60s. Agia Paraskevi is a perfect beach for the family, Lalaria is a white pebble beach and it can only be reached by boat, Jason and the Argonauts was partly filmed here. Koukonaries is one of Greece's most famous beaches a long sandy beach with beautiful surroundings, taverns, snack bars and water sports. It is known as Chrisi Ammos Golden Sand since the sand there is extremely fine and shines under the summer sun. Banana Beach is the most popular nude beach in Skiathos.
The town has an enchanting maze of narrow streets, traditional taverns, colourful harbour front, charming craft shops, stylish boutiques and chic night life. Papadiamantis street is the main street of the town for shopping you can find clothes, souvenirs, jewellery and leather belts.
Skiathos is the island of entertainment; every thing is made for the pleasure and the enjoyment of the visitor. Most of the entertainment on Papadiamanti street, Polytechniou street, Evangelistra street and boarding the side of the port. Bars, restaurants, cafes and night clubs can be found every where in the town and in some big hotel units.
At the church Tres Ierarches is the icon of Holy Mother Panaghia Kounistra, the patron saint of the island. In side the church are the icons of the prophets and apostles, originally housed in the church of Christos at Kastro.
It is ideal for religious tourism as it has important historic monasteries such as the Monastery of Panagia Evaggelistria, Kounistra and Kehria connected with the island's history and it attracts pilgrims mostly during summer period.
